Concurrently with the Year of Zayed, and in the framework of the Centennial Initiative launched by the National Archives in celebration of the centennial birth of the Founding Leader, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the National Archives began to allow free access to its smart applications to the public for 100 days as of the inauguration of the 28th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
The National Archives seized the opportunity of the cultural and intellectual activity and momentum during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2018, which coincides with the Year of Zayed, to offer the audience and clients in the UAE and abroad a number of smart applications to enrich the knowledge of readers, writers, authors, academics and researchers with documented information on the history and heritage of the UAE and the Gulf region, and with pages of the history of the UAE and its great leaders, as well as the biography of the Founding Leader, Sheikh Zayed, who established the UAE's auspicious Union.
The National Archives’ smart applications are offered to be downloaded free by the public on their smart phones and tablets for a hundred days from the beginning of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The National Archives, through its smart applications, aims to accomplish its mission of promoting loyalty to its wise leadership, sense of belonging to the homeland and reinforcing national identity.
These smart applications include Sheikh Zayed's audio library which contains hundreds of audio recordings of his quotes on various local, Arab and international topics and issues. The search technique of this audio library has the ability to search according to the subject of quotes, the date in which it was said, and according to certain key words as well. Thus, the National Archives offers some of its documented treasures and holdings in it audio form to researchers and clients, to resonate the warm voice of the Founding Leader, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who spared no effort to lay the foundations for establishing the nation and its prosperity.
The smart applications launched by the National Archives free for a hundred days include a series of chronicles of the Emirates Leaders, at the forefront of which is the book "Zayed's Chronicles", in a new edition that depicts all Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan's daily interests, and his activities in the various fields of life in five volumes covering the period from 1966 to 2004 which has been documented in a way that facilitates reference to the origin and source of the information,  since events were listed according to their subjects, with the date in which they occurred and their source. These diaries document Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan's virtues, and document the history of the UAE, its establishment and prosperity, and highlight the historical role of the Founding Leader in consolidating the pillars of the UAE.
Also included in the applications, the chronicles of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HH Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
The volumes of the Sheikhs' chronicles published by the National Archives include sheikhs’ activities and events, documented in a chronological and objective sequence throughout the period covered by the diaries, whether these were social, economic, media or political activities. These chronicles are based on daily newspapers and official publications. The content was redesigned and its information adapted to the new electronic publishing method, and all these chronicles include an annex of photographs documenting aspects of the Sheikhs activities and achievements, and a detailed index of topics.
These publications come within the framework of the National Archive's keenness to document the history and heritage of the United Arab Emirates. Their Highnesses, the Sheikhs, are the pioneer makers of the UAE events, as they took charge of its development, and the prosperity and welfare of its people, and were entrusted with maintaining its security and stability. Accordingly, it was necessary and important to depict and document their activities, decisions and visions to serve as a guide for future generations in their journey of building their nation, and as role models for these generations to follow their footsteps on the path of dedication and loyalty to the UAE.
The National Archives allow readers and users access to its electronic journals through smart phones and tablets. This application allows interactive access to the displayed material. The required information can be searched or retrieved by subject, date, or source accurately and quickly.
These smart applications also included the educational booklet issued by the National Archives entitled "Watani Al Emarat" which contains topics dealing with the history and heritage of the UAE. The applications also include a collection of other books, such as: "Zayed from Challenges to Union" , "Zayed, a Man who Built a Nation", "Zayed, the Desert Man and Civilization Builder", "Khalifa, a Journey into the Future", "Qasr Al Hosn… History of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi", "Classical Ships in Islam", and some issues of the “Liwa Journal”, an academic refereed journal issued by the National Archives, and others.
In the National Archives' application, the user can access the historical archive documents, as well as historical photos.
The National Archives' applications also include the Al Nahyan Family Tree, which presents a smart electronic program that identifies the most prominent figures of the Al Nahyan family and takes particular interest in the eminent personalities who ruled the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The home page of the Al Nahyan Family Tree smart application consists of a photo of Sheikh Zayed and his sons. The late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan, ruled the Emirate of Abu Dhabi that witnessed great development and prosperity during his reign thanks to his experience and good management. Thus, the establishment of the UAE was due to his efforts along with those of his fellow Rulers of the Emirates.  His sons, their Highnesses the Sheikhs, followed his steps on the path of preserving the country and its achievements.
It is worth mentioning that these smart applications, with their diversity and national objectives, enhance the national values and knowledge among members of the community and instill the values and national principles of Sheikh Zayed in future generations.
