International Council on Archives and Forum of National Archivists Press Release

The International Council on Archives (ICA) is a neutral, non-governmental organisation, funded by its membership, which operates through the activities of that diverse membership. The organisation unites archival institutions and practitioners from across the globe to advocate for good archival management and the physical protection of recorded heritage, to produce reputable standards and best practices, and to encourage dialogue, exchange, and transmission of this knowledge and expertise across national borders. With more than 1500 members in 199 countries and territories the Council's ethos is to harness the cultural diversity of its membership to deliver effective solutions and a flexible, imaginative profession.
The Forum of National Archivists (FAN) is a section of the ICA empowered by the ICA Constitution to develop high-level strategic responses to the contemporary challenges of managing archives. FAN comprises members from more than 160 countries. Working closely with the ICA, FAN provides an opportunity for national archivists to share their diverse knowledge and expertise, for the benefit of archives globally.
This year the ICA have the honour and privilege of holding its governance meetings, including the meeting of FAN in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates. The ICA is currently revisiting its strategic direction and having the opportunity to host its meetings in such a dynamic and forward-looking city and country, we hope that it will help governance board members come up with innovative ideas and approaches to ICA’s future.
FAN Abu Dhabi 2019 includes inspiring strategic discussions  and presentations focused on topics of pressing interest for national archivists throughout the world. The event features high-profile thought-leaders , interactive sessions and discussions. The meeting is an opportunity for national archivists and colleagues to participate in significant strategic conversations, aligned with the emerging themes of the ICA Congress 2020. This includes exploring how to influence and advocate more effectively on archival issues to governments, key organisations and stakeholders; creating inspiring archival strategy in the digital era; learning and interacting with digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and machine learning; and, deploying practical digital solutions in a financially constrained environment. FAN is one of the international forums best placed to galvanise national archivists into exploring the possibilities digital technologies present for archives of all kinds, especially during times of significant change.

The Council will also be holding its major Quadrennial Congress in Abu Dhabi in November 2020, in partnership with and with the support of the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates. The congress theme: ‘Empowering Knowledge Societies’ will allow archival and information professionals to discuss and examine the impacts of new technologies (i.e. artificial intelligence, blockchain, semantic web), the role of archives and information in ensuring sustainable development, along with evidence and trust in a post-truth world. The ICA is looking forward to this Congress and see it as an opportunity to push the boundaries of archival thought and practice internationally.
