The National Archives Holds a Workshop to Exchange Experiences in Oral History with the Sharjah Center for Documentation and Research

The National Archives of the UAE conducted a workshop in its headquarters in Abu Dhabi for Sharjah Center for Documentation and Research employees on the elements of scientific methodology of oral history interviews. The workshop dealt with the importance of gathering and archiving oral history in order to enrich the nation’s history. Additionally, the workshop demonstrated the required methods and procedures to document each interview of the Oral History Section. The workshop also demonstrated the NA’s studies of genealogy and their benefits.

 The Director of the Research and Study Services Department, Dr. Aisha Bilkhair welcomed the participants and said, “We in the National Archives are glad to exchange experiences with bodies and organizations within the UAE in order to learn their best practices and benefit from their adopted procedures. Being the representative of Asia in the International Oral History Association, we strive to conduct benchmarking. We endeavor to follow the uppermost standards in accordance with the global scientific procedures, and we pay special attention to gather and document oral history methodically obtaining vital historical facts from the memory of the elderly narrators”. Dr. Aisha Bilkhair stressed that each interview the NA conducts with elderly narrators involves signing a waiver to preserve the rights of the NA as well as the narrator.

 Ms. Amna Al-Suwaidi, the Research and Studies Supervisor in the Sharjah Center for Documentation and Research, commended the leading role the NA plays in preserving the memory of the nation and its rich history. She emphasized that the cooperation between the Nation Archives and the Sharjah Center for Documentation and Research will improve the task both seek to accomplish.

It is worth mentioning, the workshop facilitated by Ms. Shareena Al Qubaisi, Head of Oral History Unit, dealt with all the procedures that the NA follow when holding an oral history interview in order to preserve, document and benefit from it, in addition to printing and publishing it so that researchers and interested parties access it.

 Both sides exchanged experiences and information regarding official stakeholders and scientific research methodology.
