The National Archives Participates in an International Conference at the UNESCO Headquarters

The National Archives of the United Arab Emirates participated in the PERSIST conference on enhancing the global sustainability of information, which was recently held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris under the sponsorship of the International Council on Archives, the UNESCO and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. The conference discussed the policies, content and technologies that contribute to the collection of digital assets and establishment of a digital repository that serves the world. The National Archives presented a paper at the conference entitled "Digital Preservation", which included a presentation on the National Archives and its most important projects in digital archiving.
The participation of the National Archives at the UNESCO Forum on Data Conservation Systems and the discussion of archiving policies and its digital content and techniques and how to benefit from these experiences, such as in the cases of the Dutch Archives and the Indian Archives, was displayed at the forum. Within this framework, the two representatives of the National Archives at the conference, Mr. Hamad Al-Mutairi, Head of Information Technology Section, and Mr. Robert Buckley, the Technical Adviser, were briefed on the idea of a digital repository and the relevant concepts in this field. They were also briefed about the ways archives serve the world, and how to select digital content and identify the important techniques, data, and digital systems in this field in addition to the role of social networking tools.
About the importance of the conference of the policies, digital content and techniques that contribute to the collection of digital assets and the establishment of a digital repository that serves the world, Mr. Hamad Al-Mutairi, Head of IT at the National Archives, said, “The National Archives of the United Arab Emirates strives to adopt the best international practices in its fields of specialties, and it also works within the integrational strategy that emphasizes its place among the world's major archival institutions, therefore it was necessary to follow the events of that large global project of establishing a digital repository that serves the world.” That was the most important axis of the conference. The conference held specialized forums that are relevant to the archives’ tasks, which motivated the laying down of the necessary strategies to create a policy for digital conservation and the full readiness to participate actively in the digital world, which enables accessing all kinds of information and knowledge.
