The National Archives Devotes Attention to the Special Needs Community

The UAE’s National Archives strengthened its attention to the special needs community which includes elderly people, juveniles, disabled, orphans, and needy people. It contributed to their rehabilitation and facilitating their involvement in the community. The NA’s attention comes in line with the UAE’s full consideration given to this community.
In this respect, the NA annually celebrates the International Day of Older Persons through visiting the Old People’s Home in Sharjah. It delivered a lecture at the Juvenile Center and provided support for Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs – Abu Dhabi Center for Autism as it made its halls available for their events and provided them with publications required for their activities. During Ramadan, the NA participates in charity campaigns in cooperation with the UAE’s Red Crescent. It gives donations to needy people and sponsors social and sporting activities such as horse races, the Zayed Charity Marathon, and more.
The NA’s interest in this community emerges from its belonging to the UAE, which is one of the leading countries in the field of social responsibility. The UAE adopts the international best practices in this regard as instructed by its wise leadership, which sponsors and supports community services at all levels. The NA’s shows its interest in helping people of special needs through organizing visits, raising awareness, and holding educational meetings either in its premises or at the specific care homes. Moreover, it provides programs conducted by experts and specialists in effective communication with the public. In achieving their tasks, they use tools such as the educational e-book, which provides audio-visual information about the UAE and its history. Such events are held in coordination directly between the NA and the care homes and in accordance with the needs of each home.
The NA organizes programs for the special needs community in order to let them feel the importance of their roles in the stage of development. It provides them with lectures that enhance their loyalty and belonging and strengthen their national identity. One of the remarkable lectures was the one which discussed the national triangle “Identity, Loyalty and Belonging...Senior National Values”. The lecture focuses on the historical facts that aim at enhancing the collective identity and the spirit of national solidarity. The lectures are enriched with documents, photos, and sayings of the great men who founded the Union and maintained its development. Through such lectures, the NA emphasizes the need of the nation for its sincere citizens and their role in building their nation and preserving its achievements.
As a part of the NA’s role in national education, which strengthens the relations and ties between people of the special needs community and the Memory of the Nation through activities and events, the NA delegates experts and specialized lecturers to care homes across the UAE all the year round. The provided lectures develop the personalities of that community, enrich their cultural awareness, enhance their relationship with the Memory of the Nation, and use their patriotism as reason for becoming involved in the community.
The NA’s aims are in line with the wise leadership’s interest and in accordance with the federal law on the rights of special needs people. The law states, “Disabilities, in themselves, shall not be an obstacle in joining or enrolling in any educational institution of any type whether governmental or private”.
