The National Archives Concludes a Memorandum of Understanding With the National and Reserve Service Authority

General Command of the Armed Forces, represented by the National and Reserve Service Authority and the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding that aimed at promoting knowledge and national culture for the National Service recruits at the headquarters of the National Archives in Abu Dhabi.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the General Command of the Armed Forces by Staff Major General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of National and Reserve Service Authority, while it was signed on behalf of the National Archives by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla El Reyes, Director General of the National Archives.
The MoU comes within the context of the desire of the two parties in establishing a partnership of understanding to achieve the optimal benefit of the possibilities available in the National Archives to support a national service project, provide advice for the establishment of a special archives project for the National Service in accordance with the latest international standards for documenting the process of the project, and to contribute to the promotion of knowledge and national culture to the recruits of the National Service by providing them with the opportunity to peruse some of the important historical and national documents held by the National Archives. The National Archives will also provide the necessary support to enrich the curriculum, with regard to national identity, UAE history, and to give lectures and organize training workshops.
And Staff Major General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of National and Reserve Service Authority appraised the concern of the National Archives in signing this agreement for the benefits to our homeland and its protectors and expressed his confidence that the National Archives will utilize all its abilities to follow the articles of the MoU that focus on serving the UAE citizens and make them aware of the importance of national service. He affirmed his full interest in benefitting from staff members of the National Archives and its collections in promoting national identity, supporting the values of belonging and loyalty to the nation and the wise leadership in the hearts of the UAE youth, and to follow the path of the Founding Leaders, whose biographies and values are full of the love of the homeland and of the dedication to develop, maintain, and protect.
From his side, HE Dr. Abdulla El Reyes, Director General of the National Archives expressed his pleasure for the signing of the MoU with the General Command of the Armed Forces, considering it as a new opportunity to exert more efforts for the service of the UAE and its citizens. He said that was the sublime goal of the National Archives. HE also said, “We at the National Archives will do our best in order to follow this MoU and achieve its aspired objectives; we are sure that the experiences the National Archives had gained in the fields of education at all levels – through its national programs and cultural seasons – constitute the proof of its confidence and ability to implant values of national identity and promote national loyalty and strengthen the sense of belonging among young people, which increase the coherence and impulse in each of them to protect the nation, and elevates their commitment to the highest principles and values.”
HE Dr. El Reyes added, “Since documents and records constitute the cornerstone of institutions, and since knowing the past sheds light on our path towards the future, the National Archives will contribute to document the march of the ambitious national service towards glory from its inception. The archiving experts will work hard to support the establishment of an archive in accordance with the latest international standards that take into account the characteristics of the military document and its specifications.
It is noteworthy that the articles of the MoU between the General Command of the Armed Forces, represented by National and Reserve Service Authority and the National Archives, also include utilizing the logistics, knowledge, advisory, and technical potentials to support a national service project to achieve its sublime objectives and the establishment of activities, events, conferences and exhibitions, or participating in them, setting up joint ventures in the field of research, studies and media, and in exchanging books, bulletins, and pamphlets issued by the two parties.
Staff Major General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, and his entourage watched a three-dimensional documentary that presents the aspects of the past and the bright present of the Emirates in the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Hall of Virtual Reality. They then had a tour in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Hall to familiarize themselves with the National Archives’ collections of rare books, written documents, maps, and historical photographs, which document a very important historical period; that is the establishment of the Union and the efforts of the great Founding Leaders for the building and prosperity of the nation.
Staff Major General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, and his entourage visited the Presidential Archives Department at the National Archives, which contains photographs and videos documenting the activities of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at both the local and external levels. The Department also retains the old documentaries and works hard in their restoration, montage, and digitization. The Department maintains more than 65,000 photographs and more than 13,000 celluloids.
