In line with the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President, declaring 2016 as the Reading Year, the National Archives - within the context of “A Nation That Reads” project – has distributed thousands of its national publications to official institutions in the UAE and abroad and to a large number of public and private libraries, researchers, academics and people who are interested in the history and heritage of the UAE with a view of disseminating the documented information that promotes national knowledge.
Commenting on this activity that promotes reading in community, HE Majid Sultan Al Muhairi, the National Archives’ Executive Director said: In response to the initiative “2016 as the Reading Year”, the National Archives distributed thousands of its publications, at the forefront of them are: (Khalifa: Journey Into The Future), (Zayed, Man Who Built A Nation) and (Liwa) the scientific refereed magazine in Arabic and English, with the objective of promoting reading, disseminating national knowledge and providing a real and documented portrait of the history and heritage of the UAE and the Gulf region, the march of the founding leader Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the march of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President. That was within the National archives’ mission, which seeks to provide documented and honest information. Furthermore, it comes in response to the increasing demand for the National Archives’ publications that enrich the cultural field with honest and documented research on the history of the nation and its great leaders.
Al Muhairi added: the distribution of the National Archives’ publications complements the many activities it takes for the reading year and its efforts to make reading a style of life, which will in turn contribute to disseminate the culture of science and knowledge among the UAE Nationals and the expatriates as well.
HE said: Encouraging reading in our current world is a challenge; as instilling it the souls of the members of the community is not an easy job. There is a need to persuade the family in the first place and then you persuade their sons and daughters. That is only possible with the trust in reading results and impact on the advancement of the homeland and its people and by removing obstacles in publishing knowledge and sciences. Reading will become popular if the role of family and environment    is reinforced.
HE Al Muhairi stressed that the National Archives is keen on distributing books that are rich with documented national information because of their national and cultural value. At the forefront of these publications is “Khalifa: Journey Into The Future”, the book that highlights a diverse spectrum of roles performed by HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which have been essential in the transformation of the UAE as it proceed with the intensive development. By the 1990s, HH Sheikh Khalifa assumed more vital national duties, and eventually he became the UAE President on 2 November 2004. During the first decade of his presidency, he has always being as a real modern leader and proved that he is ready to face the difficulties. In fact, the UAE proved itself for the second time as it was blessed with a leader who has high-status among the contemporary elite world leaders.
It is noteworthy that the book: (Khalifa: Journey Into The Future), which has recently been distributed a large number is the latest of the National Archives’ publications. The book documents the eventful record of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the impact of his outstanding leadership, which extends across the Arab world and the international arena. It also highlights Sheikh Khalifa’s unique and interesting life story. Although HH Khalifa is a public character, but the whole record of his biography was unveiled for the first time.
In the book foreword, HH Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the National Archives wrote: “I have had the privilege to observe, at close hand, the unique personality and leadership provided by Sheikh Khalifa. His presidency, to date a period of ten years, has straddled two different centuries and been faced with many challenges as charted in this volume, each of which he has met with characteristic equanimity, compassion and a constant drive towards excellence, the very definition of successful leadership.”

Deputy Minister of Presidential Affairs, HE Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi wrote the preface of the book of saying: “For four decades I have had the honor to serve Sheikh Khalifa. During that time, I have witnessed his unstinting commitment to an ideal, a profound belief that duty comes before self. Sheikh Khalifa has led his nation during a personal odyssey that has seen him provide effective, dynamic leadership during the most dramatic period of technological and socio-economic change in human history.
HE Al Zaabi praised the book pointing out that the book “Khalifa: Journey Into The Future” tells the story of a remarkable life. A life well spent.
The book touches on the most important stages in Sheikh Khalifa’s life and records His Highness’ march shedding light on his ongoing presidency for more than a decade. He emerged not only as a statesman on the world stage but also as a dear leader with a fatherly character cherished by his people.
The distribution of the National Archives’ publications comes within the context of providing the academic and cultural circles and other interested parties in documented information dealing with historical national issues and contribute to useful reading that strengthen community’s national values.
